I know I can trust You

Steady My Heart by Kari Jobe (Great song - check it out)!!!

Christmas Time is absolutely hands down my FAVORITE time of the year.  Has been since I was a little girl, and every year it continues to be my favorite, and my love for it grows even more each year especially as a parent, and getting to share that with my kids.

I can remembr when I first had Justin (in September mind you) I was not very well versed on nursery songs and lullaby's.  I knew a couple but being the fussy little guy he was, I would run out quickly of the ones I knew, and found myself singing christmas carols to him - lol.  But I am one of those that can hear a christmas song in July and smile.  Now I wont go so far as to listen 24x7 at that point, but one little song can't hurt!!!

I asked the littles the other day, what season of the year it was, totally expecting to hear Advent since we've been talking about it at church, and they all shouted with great excitment, Winter!!!  Except Madison, she was still in Fall.  But considering I asked for season, I cant fault them too much.  ;)

I then proceeded to ask what we celebrate at Christmas and they proudly declared Santa, and with a disappointing look on my face one of the littles got the hint and said Jesus (good job Jacob).  Jesus IS the reason for the season.  Its hard as a parent to compete with that magical old saint nick.  I mean, dont get me wrong, I love Santa, but more importantly I want my kids to know Jesus.  I have a goal to have a whole tree dedicated to Santa, so maybe thats where I'm going wrong in my lessons - ha.

With that being said, some friends and I have decided to have a little christmas party for the kids.  A tradition we intend to keep.  Kim and I often talk about whether or not our kids will be friends way late into life.  I think it would be awesome, as her friendship is one I treasure greatly.  I have a few friends who I have known for a LONG time and still talk to regularly and I find that to be pretty awesome.  Anyays, I digress.  We had so much fun with the kids, and bringing them together and starting these traditions is sooo much fun.

Santa showed up at the house, jingle bells in hand, and visited with each of the kids.  He and Mrs. Clause were telling us all about the busy life at the North Pole, and they sang some Christmas Carols with us, and had a small gift for each of the children.

Once santa left we made Reindeer Food, decorated sugar cookies, and then got into Pajamas to watch Polar Express (although I dont think there was much watching as the kids were too busy playing and having fun).  We mad the most delicisous Polar Express Hot Chocolate (thanks Pinterest) and just enjoyed a fun evening of friends and family.

Magic Reindeer Food
Sprinkle on the lawn at Night,
the moon will make it sparkel bright.
As the reindeer fly and roam,
this will guide them to your home!!!

Decorating cookies.  The kids goal was to get every sprinkle they could onto the cookie!!!  Talk about sugar highs!!!

At last, my love has come along

I hope I dont sound too contradicting in my writing.  I am in a very good happy place in my life, but I also think its important to know that its not always easy to wear the smile.  And there are times where the pain hurts, and the divorce hurts.  I dont fully understand what happened and Im not sure I ever will, and it seems when the other person makes the decision its over, you tend to bear a lot of that weight on your own shoulders.  Why wasnt I good enough, was i not skinny enough, was i not pretty enough, was it because I dont love to cook and clean, like i said, i have self evaluated myself to tears, but I also know I have a lot of love to give, and I have Jesus in my heart, and I have a lot of good qualities, no Im not perfect, I would never pretend to be, but I am Me, and each day I grow a little stronger and a little better.  I am not the same person i was a year ago.

I find my biggest struggles happen when the housework gets overwhelming, and there is so much to do and I feel like I'm all alone.  Or nights when my little angels seem to have misplaced their halo's and turn into crazed monsters.  Single parents have a tough job, i always knew that, but man, firsthand, its no joke.  It took me a while to even think of myself as a single parent, a reality I certainly didnt want to believe.  A lot falls on one person's shoulders.   Sure you have parenting time, but its been an adjustment thats for sure.  Josh doesnt have a place to take the kids, and so its impossible for him to take them overnight, he usually spends his time with the kids at our house, or they go and do something for the day and come back in the evening.

Its hard to not feel anger and resentment toward the other parent when things are tough and you are the one making dinner, cleaning up dinner, trying to get through 4 kids laundry who seem to wear 4 different outfits each day, plus your own laundry, and the umpteen towels we seem to go through as well.   Making sure their homework is done, notebooks are signed, spelling words are studied, lunches are made, are the kids learning their sight words, can the older kids read, dont forget we have to get our reading logs done, and how are they doing in math.  Bath time is always fun, deciding who goes first and who helps the littler kids or babies and Jacob and Justin refer to Joey and Madison.  Thank goodness they get more and more self sufficient every day.  Then aside from keeping them bathed, clean clothes, fed, and ready for school, you still have to parent them and teach them so that you raise a kid who is a valuable part of society, deal with their emotions of the divorce and explain to them if you could fix it you would.  Help them to understand something that I as an adult struggle to understand.  They had so many questions in the beginning, it was heartbreaking.  Asking who their dad was going to be, why wouldnt I let him come back home, and it never seemed like they asked Josh, it was always me that had to answer those questions, me, the one who didnt want this divorce.  I was the one wiping those tears while wiping mine, and explain that no matter what, Daddy and I loved them soooo much.  Nothing would ever change that, no matter where we lived or how often we saw them.   For a long time Madison just thought Josh was at work all the time.  I think she's finally understanding it now, but it takes time.  Justin takes on a major role as big brother.  He always reminds me that there are 4 of them and only one of me.  Sometimes he tries to help be the parent, and I have to remind him, he doesnt have to take on that responsibility.  He's a kid, and he should just enjoy that time.  He will have plenty of time in life to have to be responsible and worries of this adult world.

There's an emptiness that exists for sure, but my kids rarely leave time for me to have a pity party, which is a good thing.  They keep me on my feet and they always seem to have the right words and the hugs when I need them most.  I really think that God works through them.  I believe God is so at work in my life, and its fun to see it when it hits me smack in the face.

It's also funny how when you have been through or are going through a heartbreak, things effect you differently than they did before that life event.   I went through a phase where I could not watch any TV.  I couldnt bear to see a break up on TV or the opposite and see a love story being played out, it was just too painful.  I spent most of January, February, and March reading my Bible and reading devotions.  I also couldn't listen to any music besides Christian music, and Im really grateful to that experience, because I realized how powerful that Genre of music really can be.  I slowly started to watch American Idol, where I got to watch Colton Dixon show his love of worship songs and talk about his Faith and what it meant for him.  It was so nice to see God at work, even on my favorite TV programs.

Slowly but surely I let myself watch more shows, especially since the DVR was threatening to erase shows I missed, I couldnt bare the thought of that.  I remember watching shows and commercials for Christmas would come on and it would confuse me for a minute then I remembered I was a little behind.  I am also a huge believer in signs, and things happen for a reason, however sometimes trying to figure out the reason can be quite perplexing.  Sometimes its a battle of will, what I want it to mean and what it really means, you know Gods plan.

I've learned you cant battle God, He wins, and I can make it harder on myself, but if i just step back and let him lead me where I'm supposed to be, its much easier.  Its still a struggle but I will tell you its been an enlightening journey.  I would like to share a few experiences I've had over the past year, not all at once but as I continue to write on this blog.

First of all, Becky and I have been extremely close through this whole situation.  Both of us going through a heartbreak, and having to look at our precious babies and stay strong for them.  Oddly enough the boys who broke our hearts were brothers, who ended up living together.  It almost felt weird, like they were over at aarons together doing their thing, and here we were at my house doing our thing with the kids.  It seemed pretty messed up actually, but it is what it is.  At times, it almost seemed so perfectly timed with them, but then no, they wouldnt plan this out, its just the way things were supposed to work out.   And although our situations were slightly different, we both had a lot of pain.  We leaned on each other, cried together, laughed together, and moved forward together.  Texting each other deep into the night, even at 3 in the morning when neither of us were sleeping.  We grew stronger together as well.  Becky and I dont alway see eye to eye, but we both know that we come from a place of love for each other.  She and Olivia have been a huge part of my life, and I love them both a lot.  I love seeing the kids together, and the relationship that they have.  I always wanted lots of cousins for my kids, and Olivia was the first cousin that lived close to us.  To see them have this relationship is just awesome!!!  People are put in your life for a reason.  I can remember at times I would share bible verses with Becky that would help me when i was sad or angry.  Becky and I were at different levels in our faith, but we both believe in God.  I would encourage Becky to read the Bible and seek God's word, and while she didnt resist totally, she wasnt as quick to get there.  I remember becky telling me that she had gone to the store on two different ocassions and she ended up holding the door open for two different elderly woman at two different place and different days.  Both women thanked Becky and said that there would be a place for Becky in heaven.  Then when Colton Dixon who was one of Becky's fave singers on idol started to sing worship songs and tweeting Bible verses, it was another way God was working in Becky's life.  I used to tease her that God would hve to work a little harder to reach out to Becky, but that he knew how he would do it!!!  :)  He got her where it meant the most, music!!!  Oh and her grandmother.  What are the odds she would find a letter hand written from her grandmother about always keeping God in her heart!!!  Man I love how God works.

Until I write again!!!  LOL

I Will Lay Down My Heart

The last post I made was about A New Year's Blessing.  It has a totally different tone for me today than it did when I originally posted it, but both times it was so powerful, be it in very different ways.  I originally posted this blog last year in January, at the beginning of one of the toughest emotional journey's I have ever been through.

May God make your year a happy one!

Not by shielding you from all sorrow and pain,
But by strengthening you to bear it as it comes;

Not by making your path easy,
But by making you sturdy to travel any path;

Not by taking hardships from you,
But by taking fear from your heart;

Not by granting you unbroken sunshine,
But by keeping your face bright, even in the shadows;

Not by making your life always pleasant,
But by showing you when people and their causes need you most,

And by making you anxious to be there to help.

God’s love, peace, hope and joy to you for the year ahead.

Last year when I first read this, this poem encouraged me that I would be ok and I would get through this storm.  That by putting my trust in God, I would come out stronger.  Today I stand living proof of this poem I'm sure.  Nothing in life is a guarantee, especially tomorrow.  I have gone through this year, taking it one day at a time, learning that no one promises easy, but these experiences definitely make us better and stronger.  And I can tell you, its a completely new way to look at life.  And those of you who experience this first hand, know that difference.  Its easy to get caught up in ourselves and the worries, but when you step back and really process things, its a whole new way of life.  I know we have all experienced loss in some way or form.  Everyone's journey through life is different, but it all leads to a greater love than we could ever know here on Earth.  The love of our Heavenly Father and the life in eternity with Him is what matters.

Im not sure how many people or who even reads this, but Im just sharing some thoughts, feelings, and emotions I have gone through over the year.  I have spent a lot of 2012 reflecting on things, and self-evaluating.  By now I think its safe to say most people know that Josh and I are separated and going through a divorce.  It hurts and is still hard to say and write those words.  It sort of forces it to be real when you have to write or say it, its total admission.  I absolutely abhor the "D" word.  Its more than a hatred.  I can't tell you how many forms i've looked at for way longer than i should when it asks you to check the box single, married, or divorced.   Ugh!  It almost feels shameful to check the box that says divorced.  Its sort of embarassing too.  Like it really can make you feel like such a failure.  Who knew that it would be such a challenge to get through, and people probably look at you like whats the hang up lady.  I also have a hard time using the word "ex".  Its all so negative, and thats one thing I am not, nor will I ever be.  I also dont like defining myself democrat or republican either.  I have my beliefs and morals that I feel are important to me, and I dont think I should be boxed into a category, but what does my opinon on that matter - lol!!!

On that note, however, I have had moments where I was bitter and angry, I still do, all part of the grieving process I know, but I refuse to let it take root in my heart.  I remember vividly attending two weddings this year and thinking to myself, what is the point of all this, these vows dont mean anything, because in 10 years people can just decide they are not happy and leave.  I couldnt help but feel the pain of the broken vows in my own life.  And its sad to see that so many people take these promises so lightly.   I was always saddened to hear people were getting divorced, but its a whole new sadness today, going through the process myself.   Some people say, "people change" or "you were so young" or "people fall out of love"......ugh i hate those statements by the way.  I dont know that I will ever fully understand what happened, or why it happened, but I choose to trust its for Good.   I also found myself feeling jealous of poeple who were happy in their marriage, and being a "family".  Its hard to be camping and see so many Dad's with their kids and then feeling like, man i have to do this all by myself, and I wish I had someone to help me, or whatever pity party I wanted to throw myself at any given moment.  But then I realized, there is also something liberating about being able to do things on my own, and being able to show my kids that life doesnt come easy or always go your way, but you just make the best of things, and never let it get the best of you.  And I hope and pray everyday that I can be a good example to my children.

I've also had to deal wiht the kids feeling like they are not a family anymore, which again is heartbreaking, but we have also learned how to redefine our family.  And although it may not be like everyone else's, it is ours.  And that makes it special.  Although sad to say, i think divorced families are becoming more normal than not.

Divorce is not just sad for the people being divorced, its so much bigger than that.  It affects so many people.  Friends feel like they have to pick sides, parents feel like they have lost a child, parents worrying about their own child and if they are holding up through all of this,  kids having to share time with mom and dad and where they live and who is going to be there with them and when.  It hurts.    There are a few times I cant even admit im divorced, my hair dresser for instance doesnt know im going to be divorced, but I will say it does make for some awkward conversation when I see her - lol.   And now I feel like, ok, how do I let her know that we are divorced without number 1 crying, and number 2 being like, you were just here 6 weeks ago, what happened - lol.   That one I will have to still figure out!!!    You really learn a lot about friends and family, and I have an amazing support system, and they have been everything to me.

Josh and I have been together for 17.5 years, and married for 10.5 years, more than half of my life.  This has been a heartbreaking but humbling experience.  Josh is a wonderful person, and father, and I will always have a spot for him in my heart.  My first love, everything, and as the father of my 4 beautiful children he will always be a part of  my life.
I have spent this year growing my faith and reading my Bible.  Babtizing all 4 of my children and firmly taking a stand in their faith.  I have been attending several Bible studies and learning so much about God and being able to share that with my children.  I think I have become a better mother, and my children are my highest priority next to Heavenly Father.  I, as any mother would, wants to shield their children from any pain they may experience, and a tough lesson as a mother is that you just cant do it.  But, I will tell you, there is great pride in helping your children to look to God in tough times, and teaching them how to handle tough situations in a positive manner.   I can say that although there have been moments that have been extremely tough in this year, I can honestly say there have been soooo many more GREAT moments that I will never forget.  I can remember thinking that I hope one day i can look back and think that 2012 didnt exist, that it will be just one bad year in the grand scheme of this journey we call life, but in all actuality, this has been a very good year.  Im not trying to sugar coat what has happened becuase it is extremely painful and difficult, but I wont let this be what defines me, and I wont let it stop me from enjoying the life i still have to live ahead of me.  And i will be grateful for all of my blessings.

Josh and I have been able to remain very civil and communicate very well, and I will always do that so that my kids never feel like they have to pick sides or choose between us.  Neither Josh nor I come from divorced parents, but I know many people have, and I always want to know what to do to make this as seamless as possible on the kids.  I dont want to mess things up, and I dont want to make light of divorce you know.  But I do know they will see Josh and I respect one another, work together to parent these kids, and make the best of a situation that isnt what either of us ever thought would happen.  Sometimes its hard to put on that happy face, but knowing its best for the kids, I will do it with a big smile.  I'm not sure why I felt the need to type this, but I did, so here it is.  I hope that it can be viewed free of judgement and just a small glimpse into the reality of a tough time in my life.

Memorial Day

Happy Memorial Day!!

Had a wonderful long weekend with the family enjoying the warm weather and sunshine. We went swimming, had a BBQ, and even made it to Greenfield Village for the Civil War Remembrance at the village. The kids really enjoyed the village, we got to see a bayonet drill, they got to enlist in the military, and saw the soldier's camp.

Here are pictures from the rest of the weekend!!

In honor of Memorial day, I found this poem and thought I would share!! Thanks to all the men and women who proudly and fearlessly defend our freedom, and my heart goes out to all the families who have lost loved ones who were fighting and protecting our freedom in this great nation!!!

FREEDOM IS NOT FREE!!

I watched the flag pass by one day.
It fluttered in the breeze.
A young Marine saluted it,
and then he stood at ease.
I looked at him in uniform
So young, so tall, so proud,
He'd stand out in any crowd.
I thought how many men like him
Had fallen through the years.
How many died on foreign soil?
How many mothers' tears?
How many pilots' planes shot down?
How many died at sea?
How many foxholes were soldiers' graves?
No, freedom isn't free.

I heard the sound of TAPS one night,
When everything was still
I listened to the bugler play
And felt a sudden chill.
I wondered just how many times
That TAPS had meant "Amen,"
When a flag had draped a coffin
Of a brother or a friend.
I thought of all the children,
Of the mothers and the wives,
Of fathers, sons and husbands
With interrupted lives.
I thought about a graveyard
At the bottom of the sea
Of unmarked graves in Arlington.
No, freedom isn't free.

Yard Work & Opening Day

Last Friday night after work, I came home and worked diligently getting our flowers planted and our front yard landscaping completed. We have lived in this house for 5 years this June and never did the landscaping so this year we decided it was time to get it done. For our first year, I think it turned out great!!! I want to find one more little shrub to put behind the weeping cherry, and then maybe a little lawn ornament of some sort to go in the flower bed. I'm gonna wait for the street fairs to see if I can find something, or maybe I'll have the kids do stepping stones with their hand prints, not sure yet. I need to paint the posts on the front porch, but the awful red color on my house is impossible to match, so I'm thinking of painting just the wood portion of the posts a greyish white to match the siding and hopefully it wont look as bad. Josh and I want to get our windows and siding done, all in due time I suppose.

Saturday was opening day, and we had a beautiful day. It was sunny and warm, and just perfect. The parade was in the morning, and the boys seemed to have a lot of fun. Josh walked with the team to help out, and he said it reminded him of when he used to play baseball. My mom and I watched the parade, stayed for opening announcements, the Anthem, and the traditional Take Me Out to the Ballgame. After that, her and I left to go stand in line to buy tickets for Madison's upcoming dance recital, and Josh stayed with the boys to finish up the opening day ceremony and baseball pictures. It was a busy busy Saturday, but lots of fun!! I think the sun shining is what really made the day, thats been few and far between this Spring.

Later that afternoon, the Orioles had their first game. They played great but lost a close one to the Angels. The final score was 8-7. Pee Wee is so much more exciting than t-ball. I expected it to be much better, but its actually a structured game with outs, strikes, and a score - hahah!! Looking forward to a fun season, here are a few pictures from their first game!!!
